Red Rope

The Girl Behind the Red Rope, by Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker, was quite a surprise. Before I dive into my review, here’s a look at the book blurb:

Ten years ago, Grace saw something that would forever change the course of history. When a terrible scourge is unleashed on the world, she and others from their religious community are already hidden deep in the hills of Tennessee, abiding by every rule that will keep them safe, pure–and alive. As long as they stay there, behind the red rope.

Her older brother’s questions and the arrival of the first outsiders she’s seen in a decade set in motion events that will cause Grace to question everything she has built her life on. Enemies rise on all sides–but who is the real enemy? And what will it cost her to uncover the truth?

For the first time, bestselling authors Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker team up and deliver an intense, tightly focused ride through the most treacherous world of all.

Though it starts out slow (in my opinion), this is a complex story that you need to ride out to see the meaning behind it. I wasn’t sure what to think at first. Was I supposed to agree with the strict, harsh religious teachings? Where was the mention of Jesus’ love and true forgiveness? Was it supposed to be a good thing that their religious community agreed to be loyal to Sylous—a mysterious being who promised protection if they obeyed his rules and followed him?

I was rather skeptical starting out, and as I continued reading, my curiosity grew. Where was this going? Who were the Fury?

If you decide to pick this one up, stick with it until you discover what is really going on (about halfway through, the intensity picks up and a lot happens). This book is a clever way to shed light on things that can keep someone blind to their true identity in Christ.

Without giving too much away, I would have liked to see Jesus’ death and resurrection mentioned in the outcome of the story–showing His great love and forgiveness. He is mentioned occasionally throughout, but I would have liked to see more focus on Him at the end.

Overall, well thought-out story with a strong message. If you decide to pick this one up, please feel free to share your thoughts! 😊

Thanks for reading! God bless you, and have a great day!
